Marvel Comics is making Thor a woman. From Time Magazine:
TIME: How do you think this will impact fans who have been with the male version of Thor for such a long time?
Jason Aaron, writer of the Thor series: If you’re a long-time Thor fan you know there’s kind of a tradition from time to time of somebody else picking up that hammer. Beta Ray Bill was a horse-faced alien guy who picked up the hammer. At one point Thor was a frog. So I think if we can accept Thor as a frog and a horse-faced alien, we should be able to accept a woman being able to pick up that hammer and wield it for a while, which surprisingly we’ve never really seen before.Time: Marvel Comics Writers Explain Why They’re Making Thor a Woman
“Axel Alonso, Marvel’s Editor-in-Chief: She wields the hammer because Thor can’t. This is different because for reasons we can’t disclose quite yet, Thor is unable to pick up the hammer. There are a number of women in Thor’s life, and we’re going to tease out for quite awhile the identity of who this woman is. But one of the women in Thor’s life picks up the hammer. She is in fact worthy. And she becomes Thor.
There’s only one Thor in the Marvel Universe. The character we know as Thor will not refer to himself as Thor anymore.”
So I guess that this character is going to wield the hammer thus having the power and now name of the god of Thunder “Thor”. This is a mega weird way to go about this but meh I’m going to sit and see what happens
well done agentmlovestacos :)
It’s needlessly complicated; just fucking call her anything else but Thor. Seriously that will end all confusion. Thor isn’t a title like Captain America…it’s a name…Thor Odinson. Did they forget?
Well as it says in the post, it is a title and other people/creatures have had the title before.
No, other people have wielded Mjolnir before. No one has ever taken his name. Thor is his birthname, not a title. You don’t get his name by getting his hammer, only his power. Look, if King Arthur gave you Excalibur and abdicated his throne, you wouldn’t be King Arthur, you’d be a king under a new name. That’s where the problem lies. Getting the hammer only gives you Thor’s powers not his name. It’s always been like that.
Not only is this potentially offensive to people who worship Thor (pagans and such) but it’s also clear that Marvel’s just pandering.
This is pandering, really. Thor is a male god. If ‘Venus’ had become a popular superhero connected to historical god status, you couldn’t just up and make it a man without being disrespectful.
once again, I am reminded of my idea for a tv movie about harriet tubman.
but we’re changing the character to a white male, and he actually captures escaped slaves now. but aside from that, it’s the exact same character.
anyone who complains will just be branded a racist who doesn’t care about race relations in america, and is just a bitter angry little bitch who needs to stop complaining because clearly this idea is just too awesome and spectacular for them to understand.
after all, harriet tubman is just a title, not a name.
